Antioxidants are a very important part of keeping a healthy body.  They help prevent deterioration of the body and of cells and also help to maintain better cell structure and integrity.  There are many ways that antioxidants can be taken into the body and one of the most common ways is through the foods that we eat.  Different foods are praised for having a variety of different antioxidants and some provide more than others. 

One of the super foods that are very high in antioxidant ratings is the acai berry.  The acai berry comes from a palm tree called the acai palm.  The fruits grows in bunches of about 500 to 900 fruits twice each year on the tree.  They are said to be one of the best foods that can be found on the planet because of the amazing combination of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients that are found in them.  There will always be a high demand for fruits, vegetables and other foods that are very nutritious and the acai berry is one that is in high demand right now.  It comes from the tropical zones of the Amazon rainforest in South America and has been a staple food for hundreds of years there.  The people have long enjoyed the health benefits of the berry and recently there have been ways discovered to harvest and preserve the highly valuable fruit.  The fruit is highly volatile and only lasts for 24 hours after it has been harvested from the tree.  Now the berry can be freeze dried or juiced and then concentrated to form an extract that can be used for supplemental purposes for many foods and diets. 

The acai berry is high in many vitamins and mineral but it is also touted for its high antioxidant content.  Antioxidants are important to the body because of a process called oxidation.  Cells and molecules will sometimes have chemical reactions that cause them to lose an electron which then becomes what is known as a free radical.  These free radicals can be very damaging to other cells and some say they are one of the main causes of cancer.  Antioxidants don’t actually stop the process of oxidation because it is a very important function of body cells and molecules, but they actually oxidize themselves so that other cells aren’t oxidized.  This helps the body to maintain stable cell regeneration and allows your essential systems to repair and maintain themselves more efficiently. 

Some very important antioxidants are actually vitamins which you have certainly heard of.  Vitamins C and E are very important antioxidants.  Research is constantly being done by scientists to help determine what the most important antioxidants are and what they can do to help people fight off the problems that are caused by cell degradation.  Cancer is one of the main focuses of the research because many people believe that cancer is caused mainly by the rampages of free radicals in the body.  The problem only gets worse as the cancer progresses and the cells simply can’t regenerate themselves.  But if we were able to find the right antioxidants, we might be able to stop or at least slow down the whole process that leads to the creation of free radicals in the body.  Some antioxidants are made by the body and most plants and animals have very complex systems that manage these processes.  The acai berry provides many antioxidants that can’t be made by the body.
