What to expect in a massage therapy job

April 27, 2010 · Filed Under Health Related Article · Comment

With how stressful life is right now, people are looking at new ways to de-stress and just relax their minds and their bodies. Massage therapy is the answer to many people’s need for de-stressing. This is the reason why it is one of the fastest growing industry.

A career in massage therapy can be pretty lucrative. Clients, who are mostly well to do or those who have money to burn, are known to give big tips especially if you have given them great service. It is actually through tips that you can earn a lot in this kind if industry. But it can also be harrowing and stressful. In order to survive on the job, you need to have the following set of characteristics.

1. Gift of the hands

Hands down, (no pun intended) having the gift of a comforting set of hands is the number one requirement for a career in massage therapy. To win customers over, you need to be skilled not only in massaging but also in relaxing. This may seem the same for most people who are not in the industry but once you are already part of it or is an avid client of massage therapy, you will know the difference.

A massage therapist can do all the right strokes to the letter but will not give comfort to the client. Some, on the other hand, may not do the conventional strokes but do relaxes the client. Some people’s hands naturally have a strong firm grip but others have a stronger grip that can be hurtful to the muscles.

2. Gift of Gab

Another way to charm your clients into giving you really big tips is the gift of talk. Actually, when you think about it the best way to talk to your clients while massaging them is to listen. Let them talk to you. Let them tell you about their problems at work and at home. Most people will have something to complain about in their career. After all, they are there in the massage therapy clinic to de-stress aren’t they?

This is the main reason why there are a lot of massage therapists who are privy to the deepest and darkest secrets of their clients. You see, when people are in a relaxed setting, they are more prone to speaking about their problems. This is especially true when they are in the company of strangers who would not really know who they are talking about. They feel that massage therapists are not really part of their world.

3. Gift of patience

Working in a massage therapy clinic will allow you to meet all kinds of people. This may be good if all of them are interesting and affable. But what if they are not? And I assure you, you will come across people who you would just like to forget because of their attitude and their personalities.

In this kind of job, you need to have the patience of a saint especially when you have a client who is obviously so wrong but is still insisting that they are right. And the worst thing is, you can’t argue because as they say, the customer is always right. You fight with them, you lose your job. That’s the way the game is played.

Grow Your Hair Back

May 18, 2009 · Filed Under Health Related Article · Comment

Though I know it is not nice to tease people who looses their hair, my brother does not seem to mind at all. His hairline has been receding since he was 18 years old, and he often jokes about finding new ways to grow hair. This has becomes some kind of a family joke, and he is usually the one who initiates the joking. While we know that there is no way to really grow hair that has been lost forever, it doesn’t mean we don’t find good humor in his efforts.

Often the root of the problem is the result of dandruff.  What causes dandruff and how it affects balding?  And are there remedies for dandruff?

I am aware that there are may products out there that claim you can grow your hair. When I say that my brother has tried them all, I mean every word of it. If the products claims to grow hair, he has tried it. He has had lotions, sprays, pills, and anything else you can think of in his possession. The end results were always the same. Each year his hairline continues to recede, and there has not been one new hair growth in that area. He hasn’t given up hope though, and as far as I know, he may be saving up for transplant surgery.

If there is something that promises you that it can help you grow your hair, you should think twice. Though products like Rogaine have been on the market for quite a while, I have never actually met anyone who says it works. I saw many Rogaine in the different bathrooms that I helped cleaned while I was in college. I don’t know if it works to grow hair, but there are many people who tried. Probably if I went back to those same bathrooms now, Rogaine would no longer be in the cabinet.

If going bald is not your problem, you want to grow hair longer. There are some that you can try. The best thing is to get a trim every month or every six weeks. Though this may sound like it contradicts your efforts of trying to grow your hair, believe me when I say this is very important. Hair that is not trimmed begins to split on the ends. If those splits are not removed, your hair will break off and will never grow. It may not seem to be productive trimming hair, but give it six months and see what happens.

Fitness Workout Program

February 19, 2009 · Filed Under Health Related Article · Comment

Tailoring your fitness workout program to your lifestyle, preferences, or fitness level is a good way to get fit. What works for someone else might not be working for you. If you have already been exercising and find that you don’t see the results you used to see or don’t see results period then it’s time to get a new fitness workout program.

There are several things you should look at when trying to put together a new fitness workout program, namely the frequency, intensity, and time that goes into your fitness workout program. Defining this and understanding what is going wrong will help you start feeling fitter and healthier in no time at all.

Frequency, Intensity, and Time

The frequency of your fitness workout program plays a big part in determining your fitness level. If you started out exercising two or three times a week and now find that you are still doing the same thing but nothing changes that you should start exercising more.

If you find that you don’t have any more time then what you are already doing then it’s time to change your fitness workout program. All that could be missing from your fitness workout program is a little intensity. This means walking faster, or lifting heavier weights. Basically you need to increase the pace of your fitness workout program.

Mixing up your fitness workout program by adding new activities is also a good way to increase the intensity of your fitness workout program. New ways of toning and shaping are such as a fitness ball workout that challenges your body will also help you to shape up.

Cross Training

Cross training is an excellent way to keep your fitness level up and to see improvements in your physique. If you stick to cardiovascular activity on one day and then resistance training on another it might be a good idea to start combining the exercises.

Variety

Variety is the best way to keep your workouts fun. Try to stick to activities that you enjoy. This way you will feel committed and enthusiastic about keeping fit instead of dreading your workout time. If you like swimming then spend the time you would usually spend working out swimming.

Another way to keep your motivation up is to find someone to exercise with you. This way you will have someone to keep you going even when you feel like staying at home on the couch instead of getting out there and getting into shape.

Hope for Panic Sufferers, Including Medications for Panic Attacks

October 14, 2008 · Filed Under Health Related Article · Comment

If you’ve been prescribed medications for panic attacks it’s important to remember that while the medication makes you feel better, this doesn’t mean you should ignore the precautions you’ve been given with them.

Antidepressants and sedatives are very serious and powerful drugs and should be used with great care.  You need to also be in touch with your doctor about side effects, drug interactions, and if you feel that you want to adjust your dosage for any reason.  Why do we say that these warnings are so vital?

For one thing, keep in mind that most medications for panic attacks are considered antidepressants or sedatives.  This means that they must be taken exactly as prescribed; taking too many can cause addiction or overdose, whereas taking too little can be ineffective.
If you’ve been prescribed medications for panic attacks and find that they just are not helping very much, you must speak to your doctor about adjusting your dosage or changing medications rather than simply taking more pills than you should.

The most commonly prescribed medications for panic attacks include Zoloft, Paxil, Prozac, Xanix, and Valium.  While these medications are very effective, it’s best if they’re used in conjunction with some form of therapy so that the panic sufferer can learn new ways of coping and of dealing with the circumstances that typically bring about panic in the sufferer.

For example, many who suffer from panic attacks may also have a touch of claustrophobia, so being in a closed room for a meeting or other reason can spark panic.  By using therapy in conjunction with medications for panic attacks, the panic sufferer can be calmed while learning that this situation is really nothing that should bring about panic.

Some have found that they are able to gradually increase their dosage of medications for panic attacks after a year or so.  This too should be done under the supervision of a doctor, and these medications should never be stopped “cold turkey.”  A doctor can adjust medications and dosages as a person’s symptoms decrease as well.

While medications for panic attacks have come a long way since they were first made many years ago, they are still serious medications and should be used with great care.  Any questions about their dosage should be directed toward your doctor, and he or she must know about any other medications you’re taking as well.
