Depression is a state of mind that an individual gets into when there is a lot of stress happening in his or her life at the moment. Many people are affected by this state of mind and some more than others. There are people who are born with genes that make them more susceptible to a state of depression that may need therapy and medication in order to treat it. There are many different causes of this state of mind and it is not only genes that cause it.

Causes Of Depression

There are several causes of depression and these are usually attributed to stress. Mental stress is the prime cause of this state of mind along with one's genes. The piling up of many stressful situations and problems is what triggers the mood of depression. How one is made up genetically may be the reason why some people experience it longer and more deeply than others. Some people are more prone to this mood than others.

Emotional trauma is another cause of depression. A life altering event such as death or an accident can easily trigger this mental state in one’s mind. The upheaval of a home or a divorce can also be what is termed as emotional trauma. Some experiences o failure may also pile up and incite depression in some people. Manic depression can occur to those especially prone to it and the need of a trained psychiatrist may be necessary to treat the individual.

What To Look For

There are plenty of signs that a person may be suffering from depression. Listlessness, anxiety and unwillingness to participate in some activities can be signs of this mental condition. Keeping oneself and having little or no friends can also be a sign of depression especially if the individual stays at home most of the time and does not have any visitors. Other signs that a person may be suffering from depression are sleepless nights, loss of appetite and inactivity.

These signs are not the only ones that one should look out for since many people cope with depression in their own different ways. Some people behave normally on the outside but may be suffering from this condition without any outward signs or manifestations. In some ways, the release of the cause of stress can treat depression although in most cases, outside help and guidance may be necessary. Professionals are the ones that can actually treat those suffering from this condition although mild cases resolve given some time.

There are many benefits that you can get just by visiting a health and fitness center, and it is well worth taking out time from even a busy life to go and do some fitness exercises in a fitness center as it will provide your immune system with a much needed boost and you will also feel more energetic as well. What’s more, there is also a wide variety of equipment that you can use at a fitness center that will allow you to do different things including lifting weights, performing aerobics and even swimming, amongst a host of other activities.

Another advantage to visiting a fitness center is that it provides the right kind of motivation to keep you fit and with the right fitness exercise program most people actually look forward expectantly to when they will next be able to visit the center, instead of finding excuses not to exercise. Also, even though most people today live a very busy life, they should still take out some time to do something constructive and positive about remaining fit, and in any case, it is a much better alternative than simply lounging about or watching TV programs, that add to the problem rather than do anything positive.

Can you Ever Catch Up On your Sleep?

If you have trouble sleeping, you may be accumulating a debt that is difficult to pay back - a sleep debt. According to the National Sleep Foundation, about 6 out of 10 people in the United States suffers from problems getting a restful night of sleep.

There are many kinds of sleep disorders, including:

Insomnia. Poor quality sleep may result from inability to fall asleep, waking up frequently, waking up and being unable to return to sleep, or some combination. Females are affected more than males.

Lifestyle-related. A hectic and stressful lifestyle, work demands and over-active social lives can lead to accumulation of sleep debt. Even the use of an alarm clock can trigger more and more debt.

Sleep apnea. Obstructed or blocked air passages lead to loud snoring and cessation of breathing while asleep. This leads to sleep deprivation and daytime drowsiness.

Due to the prevalence of sleep-related disorders in our society, the usage of prescription sleeping pills is on the rise. But these medications for insomnia cures carry their own risks: drug carryover into the daytime leading to drowsiness, psychological dependence, physical side effects including anxiety and memory problems, and potential drug interactions. And their long-term use is controversial.

Although sometimes prescription sleep aids are necessary, there are many other simple and easy-to-implement cures for insomnia:

1) Don’t engage in mentally stimulating activities prior to bedtime.
2) Keep your bedroom as dark as possible - this helps regulate the hormone responsible for sleeping and waking.
3) Keep pets out of the bedroom.
4) Eat a light snack before bed, preferably one with protein.
5) Exercise daily.
6) Keep a regular schedule of sleeping and waking.
7) Have yourself checked for depression - it is a common cause of sleep disturbance.
8) Avoid caffeine and alcohol, especially within 6 hours of bedtime.
9) Don’t take naps during the day.
10) Quit drinking fluids 2 hours before bedtime to reduce your chance of having to get up to go to the bathroom.

Large amounts of accumulated sleep debt can be a serious problem. For example, driving can place both you and other people at risk. Frighteningly, a 2002 National Sleep Foundation poll found that 14 million people reported actually falling asleep at the wheel during the last year.

If you have been having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor about your condition and your options. Besides depression, many other potentially serious health disorders may be causing your sleeping difficulties. Don’t ignore this debt until it becomes too late to repay.

What Is Conductive Keratoplasty?

When people start to notice that they eyesight is “slipping” and things are not as clear, bright or sharp as they used to be, most folks take such changes pretty seriously and begin to seek out ways to help improve their vision. But many people, when faced with the idea of corrective eye surgery, are put off by the thought of something being somehow inserted into the eye, even if it means an ultimate improvement. The good news for such people is that conductive keratoplasty (CK) is an option for vision correction that is even less invasive than the better known forms of laser eye surgery.

CK is a fairly new kind of laser eye surgery in practice today. It utilizes a mild heat that is generated from radio waves. These waves are used to reduce the size of the connective tissues. These tissues are a glue-like collagen, found in the periphery of the cornea and which can cause vision distortions.

During the process of a conductive keratoplasty procedure, the shape of the cornea is changed and is “steepened.” This reshaping results in improved vision for people with a combination of presbyopia and far-sightedness, giving them better vision both in near and distance situations. For those patients who only have presbyopia, they can expect to have their near-vision improved.

CK is not considered to be an appropriate treatment if you are nearsighted, and Lasik eye surgery would be recommended as a better procedure for people who are either nearsighted or have an astigmatism. CK is also currently being studied for its effectiveness with correcting astigmatisms, and while early indications are that it might be effective, it is not yet being widely used to correct that type of vision problem.

When CK was first introduced, there were some problems reported with the stability of the vision corrections and instances where the cornea actually reverted back to it’s original condition before the corrective eye surgery was done. However, in recent years there have been many improvements in laser eye surgery techniques utilized in CK, and clinical studies in more recent years have shown that the procedure is delivering more stable results consistently.

In April of 2002, the FDA of the United States approved conductive keratoplasty for use with patients over the age of 40 who had mild conditions of farsightedness. Later, in 2004, the FDA expanded its approval to include presbyopia, which is a very common condition that typically effects people as they reach middle age. Presbyopia is a natural side-effect of the aging process and it causes the lens of the eye to stiffen, making it more difficult to focus at different distances at the same time.

As a result of these improvements, CK has been gaining a much greater level of acceptance among laser eye surgeons and potential patients are becoming more interested in this procedure. Ultimately, it will still be some years before long-term data on the success or failure of CK will be available, in order to make a comprehensive comparison between this type of corrective eye surgery and other procedures, such as Lasik vision surgery.

As opposed to the Lasik vision surgery approach, the conductive keratoplasty procedure does not require cutting of the surface of the cornea and no instrument of any kind is put into the eye. As a result, with CK there is virtually no chance of infections and other complications are extremely rare. And, since reports about the procedure are indicating a longer lasting effect than when first introduced, it will no doubt become a more common and popular type of corrective eye surgery.
